How to calculate Internet Bandwidth Needed for VOIP Service

VOIP trunking services get their QoS from the Backbone Networks the voice packets travel over, and from the edge devices deployed to convert the data packets to voice transmission.  ISI employs "Voice Only" backbone network(s), not interent backbones.  This means your VOIP services are not subject to large data file transfers, and heavy data flows of typical internet use.  Our iSIP Business VOIP service brings a new QoS to the VOIP market, making voice quality paramount in our service delivery.

One other way VOIP improves the quality of calls is to require higher bandwidth per voice call.  This practice means that the "last mile" link, typically a broadband internet connection, will use 85K - 90K for each simultaneous VOIP call.  To insure your local Broadband internet connection will support your VOIP, use the following simple calculation:

"Number of simultaneous Voice calls X 90K of IP bandwidth = Internet speed needed for VOIP"
